Appetizer: Mouth and Heart

The Bible teaches that there is a strong link between your mouth and your heart. In the following Proverb, the two are used as interchangeable in a comparison between the righteous and the wicked:

Proverbs 10:20

The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.

—Proverbs 10:20  
For a wise man, the heart and mouth work together to do good:

Proverbs 16:23

The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious
and adds persuasiveness to his lips.

For an evil person, they work together for evil:

Matthew 12:34

You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

So the contents of your heart, whether good or evil, determine what comes out of your mouth.

Matthew 15:17-18

Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
